One Size Does Not Fit All

Updated: Aug 12

Hey there, MisWired here. And today, I want to talk about solutions. Something I've noticed since I accepted my ADHD and Bipolar, the amount of solutions that actually end up helping me were surprisingly low. And that got me to thinking, if these solutions don't help everyone, then why are they constantly pushed. And what I've realized is that people are treated as if they are the same, if their diagnosis is accepted in the first place. The insistence of having one solution for every problem is steeped in the mindset that everyone does things similar, that we're missing only one piece of the greater puzzle if you will.

So if every solution that has been put forward for any neurodivergent diagnosis doesn't work for everyone, then what should we do? Just like with support, we should find something that works for the person. And contrary to popular belief, we know what works for us. We're either too scared to say it or think no one cares about our thoughts. So more often than not, we just stay quiet and follow solutions that don't work for us or even hurt us even more. Or we're just forced to figure out things for ourselves while putting on a brave face in public about how everything is okay when life is just one giant forest fire around us. And just like that forest fire, there isn't just one way to solve it. It's honestly frustrating when you keep seeing the same solution over and over again, knowing it doesn't help you, but not knowing what else to do, so you basically hit yourself against a brick wall, hating yourself for being different.

Overall, my issue isn't with the solutions that out there. My issue is with the lack of diversity with solutions being presented, and the one track mind people have with pushing the solutions that are there. And that's ironic considering how people label neurodiverse people, particularly Autistic and ADHDers as being all over the place, not following what people expect of us. So wouldn't it make sense to have solutions as diverse as us? Just a thought I had one day. Hopefully I make sense in what I'm trying to point out.
